Becky and Ash’s colourful wedding at Dunedin Country House and our top tips for smoke bombs at weddings!

In June we took a trip east to the village of Patrington for Becky and Ash’s wedding at Dunedin Country House. We already knew Becky and Ash pretty well before their wedding day thanks to a couple of video calls and also a brilliant engagement session a few weeks earlier, we were so excited to meet their friends and family and to share the day with everybody!

Colourful smoke bomb wedding photos

In June we took a trip east to the village of Patrington for Becky and Ash’s wedding at Dunedin Country House. We already knew Becky and Ash pretty well before their wedding day thanks to a couple of video calls and also a brilliant engagement session a few weeks earlier, we were so excited to meet their friends and family and to share the day with everybody!

Dunedin Country House wedding dream team

The backdrop for the day was the elegant Dunedin Country House, a wedding venue in East Yorkshire full of charm from the Victorian era, all set within beautifully maintained gardens.

Arriving nice and early as always to the venue, we went to say hi to the wedding dream team aka Shiela and Beth, two ladies that go above and beyond for every couple fortunate enough to get married at this beautiful venue as well as any supplier lucky enough to work here for the day. A quick run through timings and logistics for the day and we were good to go!

We also bumped into the ladies from Free Spirit Flowers while they were just finishing up their final setup for the day, their florals along with styling from Belle Bijoux all looked incredible. The cake from Tiers and Celebrations was also setup and looked fantastic, we can confirm that is was also delicious!

Getting ready at West Gate Lodge

Becky and her bridal party stayed in West Gate Lodge the night before the wedding, a self catering lodge immediately next door to Dunedin. This wonderfully spacious property was the perfect space for Becky and her bridal party to spend a night together before the big day, extending the wedding experience and fun for everybody. The spacious lodge is also a fantastic space for everyone to get ready, when we arrived Rachel and Laura were already well underway with hair and makeup, it was fantastic to catch up with Becky again and say hi to everybody else. As is our usual approach, we take a really chilled start on a wedding day when it comes to photography, focussing on introducing ourselves and chatting with everyone before we really begin photographing anybody. The first photographs we generally look for are details around the room, pulling together shoes, jewellery, flowers and any other small details that have big importance for the day ahead.

Wedding ceremonies at Dunedin Country House

The wedding ceremony space at Dunedin is an elegant and bright area full of natural light, the touches by Belle Bijoux and Free Spirit Flowers now looking even more spectacular with the room full of Becky and Ash’s favourite people. Even Charlie was there to support his humans, although the emotions were a little too much for him so he took a break outside with Wedding Woofers who made sure he was able to enjoy the wedding to the fullest too.

After a really quite moving ceremony, Becky and Ash took 5 minutes to enjoy a glass of fizz, we used this time to take everyone outside and get them armed with confetti, briefing everyone to make as much noise as they could when welcoming out Becky and Ash as Husband and Wife. A fantastic effort by every single person, this lot were NOISY and created some awesome energy, such a fun moment for the couple and some awesome images to document this. It was also really great to see some really big, brightly coloured confetti, this stuff looked awesome in the photos and added a serious splash of colour to the day.

Talking of colour, in our video calls with Becky and Ash on the run up to the wedding, they had requested photos with smoke bombs. We know this isn’t anything new in the industry but genuinely this is not something we had ever done before, Becky and Ash were fully on board to be our first! After dinner we took our opportunity and pulled out the smoke bombs which had spent the day in the side pocket of our camera bag.

Smoke Bomb Photography Top Tips

After playing with smoke bombs on one single occasion we feel we are now highly qualified to offer some tips for incorporating smoke bombs in your wedding photos.

1. Buy quality smoke bombs. The last thing you want is to pull the pin on the bomb and it fizzles out to nothing before it has even got going, you want something that gives a great amount of smoke and also last as long as possible. We had spoken with Enola Gaye at the Photo and Video show in Birmingham a couple of years ago and recommended this as a good option to Becky and Ash, Enola Gaye do a range of colours and also a range of smoke durations, we had one red and one yellow to play with and these were the longer 90 second bombs.

2. Have a plan. We are not talking about a fully rehearsed routine, but a quick run through with Becky and Ash of our vision really helped us all to make full use of the time we had with the bombs, 90 seconds went by pretty fast so we were keen to make full use of this time. Our routine was essentially a little bit of walking which looked ace with the smoke billowing out behind and then went into some extra shots where we placed the bombs on the floor to create some fantastic atmosphere in the background of some portraits.

3. Check the wind direction. If you have chosen good quality smoke bombs then you will have lots of smoke on your hands, you don’t want this to be blowing forward and creating a solid wall of smoke between you and the camera (unless of course this is the look you are going for), having the smoke blow behind looks fantastic and also prevents you from getting a face full of smoke!

4. Safety first. Smoke bombs create a huge amount of smoke and a by-product of this is heat, it is essential to handle with care and to point away from the body. Don’t be alarmed if they fizz a little when you pull the pin, this is normal but definitely gets your attention. We ensured that we cleared the area before we did these photographs and afterwards made sure the carcass of the used smoke bombs were safely disposed of.

5. Have fun. When else would you get the opportunity to play with a smoke bomb, it is your wedding day, make absolutely sure to enjoy this moment of colourful smokey joy! Enjoy the moment, enjoy each other and just go with the flow, the photos will be incredible!

Party till late, we’re there for you!

Andy from MobileDJ.co does lots of weddings at Dunedin and did a great job of encouraging people onto the dance floor to celebrate again as Becky and Ash shared their first dance, keeping the party going long into the night which made for some epic dance floor moments which we were very happy to hang around for!

We’ll always have fond memories of our time with Becky, Ash and their brilliant friends and family. Their day was packed full of colour, love and emotion and we are so happy to have been there to document it for them.

A few weeks after their wedding we received the most wonderful review from Becky and Ash, we are truly grateful for this beautiful feedback:

Best Photographers Ever!

Chris and Rachel were amazing from start to finish. Our pre wedding shoot was the ideal opportunity to get to know this amazing couple. Once our wedding day approached they were so relaxed and made a huge effort for us and our family. They blended into our wedding party and made sure we had the best photos ever. They stayed until late which meant they could get photos well into the night as well as the day. We have just received our wedding photos and we couldn't have wished for any better. The quality and volume of photos taken were outstanding. They made people welcome and my guests were so relaxed around them that it made for some of the best photos. We cannot recommend them enough and I will be sure to post reviews where ever possible. Thank you so much for being part of our day.

Wedding photographer and videographer, all wrapped up in one little package!

“Should I hire a photographer, a videographer, or both?” Fear not as we may have a solution for you, in this article we will run through our combined wedding photo and video package and 5 big benefits this offers.

Welcome to the world of wedding planning, whether you are planning an intimate wedding day with just a few of your nearest friends and family or you are planning the party of the century with a few hundred of your favourite people, you will likely have considered the question “should I hire a photographer, a videographer, or both?” Fear not as we may have a solution for you, in this article we will run through our combined wedding photo and video package and 5 big benefits this offers.

1. Relaxed coordination:

OK, take a moment and try to imagine you have hit fast forward and today is your wedding day. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if you could guarantee that your photographer and videographer will work together all day in perfect harmony, giving you the confidence that every aspect of your day will be captured. Combining your wedding photography and videography allows you to rest assured that both your photo and video teams are on the same page and are able to coordinate effortlessly to capture every timeless moment of your wedding day.

2. Consistent style:

The way one photographer sees the world through their camera can vary massively with the next. A huge benefit of combining your photography and videography with us is that your wedding photographs and wedding videography will be consistent in style and aesthetic with each other. No clash of style, we are all for delivering a cohesive visual story of your day across every photograph and each frame of your wedding highlight film.

3. Cost-Effective:

Budgeting when planning a wedding is important, opting for combined wedding photography and video can be a useful way to save some money and leave you with more budget to use elsewhere (an owl to deliver the rings during the ceremony, crazy golf for the afternoon, a live band for the night party, extra spending money for the honeymoon). By bundling up your photography and video with just one supplier you are not having to pay for two companies for their time, insurances, travel costs etc, we are with you already to do your photography so the additional costs for video are reduced and the overall cost for your wedding photo and video package becomes incredibly good value.

4. Enhanced creativity:

We absolutely love making wedding films for our couples, telling a story through film is a little different to telling a story with still photographs and this really has opened our eyes to another way of seeing which has also fed back into how we approach our still photography. As a creative couple we are always discussing how we approach any given situation in the best way with the tools we have, whether it is some creative lighting for some epic portraits or how we can incorporate some drone footage into your day, the possibilities really are endless when we combine forces! This keeps us excited about every wedding we are part of and keeps our work fun and fresh!

5. Streamlined communication.

Planning a wedding does have the potential to become a little hectic, having a combined photo and video package can help to streamline this process and potentially save you some stress along the way. Rather than juggling multiple suppliers you will have a single point of contact for all of your wedding photography and videography needs from your initial consultation right through to the day itself. Rachel’s background as a wedding and events coordinator is also absolutely priceless, she loves the planning process ensuring we have everything we need ahead of your day so that you can focus on what really matters: having the best day with all of your favourite people!!

So how does that all sound? The benefits of a combined wedding photo and video package are numerous, seamless coordination, consistent style, cost-effective, enhanced creativity and just one point of contact for all of your communication. Perhaps you hadn’t yet considered having a wedding videographer at all, with the benefits listed above maybe now the prospect of having a wedding highlight film is suddenly something of much more interest?

If combining your wedding photography and videography sounds like it could be a good fit for you then we’d love to hear from you!

Until then, enjoy your wedding planning, visit all the wedding fairs, sample all the cakes and remember it is your day, do it your way!!!

Little Wold Vineyard Wedding - Jemma & Roger

Our last wedding of what was an absolutely incredible 2023 took us to Little Wold Vineyard to celebrate with Jemma and Roger and to end our year with a proper party!

Little Wold Vineyard Wedding Photography

Our last wedding of what was an absolutely incredible 2023 took us to Little Wold Vineyard to celebrate with Jemma and Roger and to end our year with a proper party!

Little Wold Vineyard, as the name would suggest, is a working vineyard and a very good one too with multiple awards for their wines. Sat at the top of the vineyard is a charming building that blends rustic charm with modern architecture, positioned perfectly with views looking back over the vineyard and out onto the Yorkshire Wolds.

We first met with Jemma and Roger for a pre-wedding shoot at the vineyard in the summertime, a shoot that ended with us sharing a bottle of wine on the terrace and discussing their wedding plans. Fast forward a few months and we were all back together again at the vineyard, this time with quite a few more people (most of South Cave) all there to celebrate Jemma and Roger’s marriage.

The ceremony room at Little Wold Vineyard has one wall which is completely made of glass, this giant window is the most incredible backdrop for a wedding ceremony with guests able to take in endless views of the Yorkshire Wolds. What made this day extra special was that the sun was setting during the ceremony, and wow, it was an absolute belter of a sunset!

Thankfully the epic sunset hung around long enough for us to pop outside and get a few portraits, in just a few minutes we were back in the ceremony room (which was already emptied of chairs thanks to the awesome team at the venue) to grab the last bit of the golden sunset in one of our favourite portraits of the year, framing the sunset in the big window with Jemma and Roger sharing a moment together.

Jemma and Roger had a few group photo requests and to keep everyone warm we did these in the ceremony room, this was all pre-planned so we had a couple of our studio lights ready to go and used the bare wooden walls as the backdrop.

This was such a fun bunch of people to photograph and once the groups were done we all took our seats at the long tables in the bar area to tuck into sharing boards of cheeses, meats and pastries, washed down with wine from the vineyard. Speeches and toasts followed with some absolutely brilliant stories shared, it was fab for us to move around the room and capture all of the heartfelt moments and uncontrollable laughter.

With more guests arriving in the evening we setup a mini photo booth using the glitter wall which was part of the venue styling provided by House of Hudson Events. This is something we’ve done at other weddings in the past, this time though Jemma and Roger took it to another level by bringing along a few props to encourage a few more people to get themselves into a photo. There are some absolute gems from this part of the day!

Before the first dance we braved the wind and asked for a few volunteers to join us outside to give Jemma and Roger a send off with some sparklers, it felt like we had everyone out there with us, it was epic! The wind just added to the energy, we love these photos so much!

The high energy continued onto the dance floor which was a busy one, we jumped in with everyone to make sure we got all the shapes on camera!

For many reasons this day felt like the perfect end to our wedding season, sending us into Christmas with a spring in our step and a real appreciation for how lucky we are to do what we do!

Thanks to everyone for been so great all day and chatting to us like you’d known us for a lifetime, some very solid beard maintenance tips to take away along with some beautiful memories!

Thanks for spending some time in our little corner of the internet reading about this incredible day, check out some of the stand out moments below...

Beverley Barn Wedding - Jess & Eliott

Fast becoming one of our favourite wedding venues in East Yorkshire, Beverley Barn is a venue full of rustic charm and cosy vibes, making it the perfect setting for a magical festive wedding. We had the absolute joy of photographing Jess and Eliott’s wedding day at this fab venue, and let us tell you, it was an absolute blast!

Ghostbusters, Laughter, and Marshmallows!

The day began with the bridal party getting ready at a cozy Airbnb in Beverley, sharing time together as excitement grew for the day ahead. Meanwhile, the guys made quite the entrance at Beverley Barn, arriving in none other than a replica of the iconic Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters. Talk about making a statement!

As the ceremony unfolded in the beautiful barn, there were laughter, tears, a couple of high fives and plenty of heartfelt moments. The rustic charm of the venue combined with the joyous atmosphere of the occasion made for an experience nobody will forget in a hurry.

Following the ceremony, it was time for group photographs, we took advantage of the drone and popped this into the sky to get a mega group shot of all guests in front of the barn. We then moved to the garden retreat for smaller group shots which were important for the couple to have and to look back on.

Back inside the barn, which was already turned around and all set for dinner, we had a few minutes with the full bridal party which we made full use of to get some really fun bridal party photos, it was really cool to do these in the barn space. This was also a great opportunity to get a few portraits of Jess and Eliott in their reception space before guests were invited through to eat. The cosy ambiance of the barn provided the perfect backdrop for these intimate moments.

The incredible team at Anikas Apron provided catering, serving up delicious pies and chips that really hit the spot. Speeches followed and were filled with laughter and love, Jess taking centre stage and stealing the show.

As the evening progressed, guests enjoyed time to mingle, some relaxed in the snug with the open fire, keeping warm as they shared stories and laughter. We took advantage of the twilight to capture some magical moments with the sun setting in the background, the fairy lights of the venue adding the extra pop of light and magic!

What's a wedding without a little bit of sparkle? As the night descended, we lit up the sky with sparkler photos, adding a touch of magic to the celebrations, it was awesome to get absolutely everyone out to enjoy this moment, great energy from everyone and lots of cheers. A few guests stayed out and cozied up by the fire pits outside, roasting marshmallows which were provided at Eliott’s request, another awesome touch we loved that created moments and memories.

We love to stay late at wedding days as there is always something else that happens that deserves to be captured as part of the wedding day story. With the dance floor full of life and all ages up having a great night, the Ghostbusters theme tune made a surprise appearance, a moment we’ll never forget!

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Beverley Barn for making this day truly unforgettable. Their attention to detail and warm hospitality ensured that everything ran smoothly, allowing us to capture every precious moment. We can't wait to return to this epic venue again soon. Here's to love, laughter, and happily ever afters!

Raven Hall Wedding - Aileen & Tom

As huge fans of the North Yorkshire Coast, we were over the moon to photograph the wedding of Aileen and Tom at the spectacular Raven Hall Hotel, a day full of warmth, laughter, and a joyous ceilidh dance!

Raven Hall Wedding - Christopher Kitchen Photography and Videography

On the cliff tops of the beautiful North Yorkshire coast Raven Hall Hotel is a spectacular stage for unforgettable love stories against the backdrop of rugged cliffs and the soothing sea breeze. As huge fans of this part of the world, we were over the moon to photograph the wedding of Aileen and Tom, a celebration brimming with warmth, laughter, and joy.

The ceremony unfolded in the magnificent great hall of Raven Hall, a rustic gem with open beams and a charming wooden floor. So much joy in one room, this was a beautiful ceremony that was a total pleasure to be able to document.

Following the heartfelt exchange of vows, we used the steps of the great hall for some group photographs, not only was this a fab place to make sure we could see everybody’s faces but it sheltered the guests from the crisp coastal breeze outside which was barely above freezing.

The chill was not going to stop Aileen and Tom from venturing outdoors for some portraits overlooking the epic seascapes from the top of the cliff walls. The views were a big part of the reason to choose this incredible venue so we were so happy to be able to capture these precious moments for this beautiful couple.

As the evening unfolded, dinner and speeches filled the air with heartfelt sentiments and infectious laughter. We stole a moment to capture a creative twilight photo outside, the fairy lights of the tree lined driveway gave the most beautiful light which we added to with a pop of flash to create something unique.

A massive highlight of this day for us was the ceilidh, we have been to a few weddings with ceilidhs and they are always great fun, this one was brilliant! The rustic barn vibes of the great hall were the perfect backdrop for the ceilidh dance, everyone got involved and were on their feet, so many great moments as people bumped into each other and did their best to keep up with the instructions of the ceilidh caller. We really do love a ceilidh and were very happy to join in with a couple of dances too, thanks to everyone for welcoming us to the dance floor, you were all brilliant fun all day!

Looking back on this day we will always have fond memories of our time with Aileen, Tom and all of their wonderful guests. From the heartfelt moments of the ceremony to the spirited ceilidh that filled the night with joy, every aspect of the day was full of the most authentic love and joy.

We can’t wait to return to Raven Hall again soon, we’ll no doubt be making a few more visits to this beautiful coastline for some family hikes too!

Bunny Hill Weddings Photo and Film

“Always be prepared to have the time of your life” a line from the speeches which absolutely resonated with us! Kirsty and Danielle’s wedding at Bunny Hill was mega!!!

Bunny Hill Weddings Photo and Film

“Always be prepared to have the time of your life”

Kirsty and Danielle got married at the incredible Bunny Hill Weddings which is tucked away on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds in acres of beautiful grounds.

Our first meeting with Kirsty and Danielle was over a video call, we remember ending the call and our faces aching from smiling so much, their fun personalities are so infectious and after hearing their plans for a big party of a wedding we were pretty sure we understood the brief.

Kirsty & Danielle’s pre-wedding photoshoot at Bunny Hill Weddings

When the wedding day came around we had had already had the opportunity to spend some time together on a pre-wedding photoshoot which Bunny Hill Weddings were super accommodating, we also had the absolute pleasure of meeting their little doggo Miley who we developed a very soft spot for! It meant that arriving to Bunny Hill on the wedding day we felt like we had known Kirsty and Danielle forever and quickly jumped into the day with them.

Bunny Hill Weddings have accommodation on site and both Kirsty and Danielle were getting ready there, we were able to easily pop between rooms and spend time with both of them and their fantastic bridesmaids as they all prepared for the party in front of them!

They said “I do”

After a beautiful ceremony Kirsty and Danielle planned to have an untraditional twist on the confetti exit and opted for bubbles! We were fully onboard with this idea and decided if they were having bubbles then they should have LOTS of bubbles, to help with the bubble quantity we packed our bubble gun which claims to kick out 10,000 bubbles per minute! We have not yet been able to clarify if the 10,000 claim is accurate but one thing is certain, we had plenty of bubbles for the most incredible bubble exit!

The soundtrack for the bubble exit was delivered by the wonderfully talented Jenkins and Alexander who went on to play a chilled set on sax and guitar while everyone chilled outside with a drink on the courtyard.

Bunny Hill Weddings Photo and Film

The main reception space at Bunny Hill Weddings is a large barn that is spectacular even before adding any personal touches or dressing, Kirsty and Danielle had done much of the room dressing themselves with the help of a few close friends and really had put their own stamp on the place. We are big fans of their wedding favours which were a pair of brightly coloured sunglasses for everyone, another unique feature was the centre pieces which were cocktail trees, an idea which Bunny Hill brought to life and which the guests were very happy with! With everyone on their feet, sunglasses on and napkins waving, Kirsty and Danielle were announced into the room, entering from the balcony and dancing down the stairs, what a moment!

Bunny Hill Weddings Photo and Film

The party!

Into the evening we had some time in the woodland which was magical with the sun setting in the trees which looked stunning on both photo and film. Heading back inside it was party time and saw the return of the sunglasses and some incredible moves, Jenkins and Alexander returned to play another set and this time had everyone rocking into the night!

What an incredible day, massive congratulations Kirsty and Danielle!!!

Hybrid wedding photo and video

We have been working hard to adapt the way we work so that we can continue delivering photography galleries that tell the story of your wedding day while also having the addition of a highlights video that captures the movement and atmosphere of the day and really bring it back to life. We are delighted to share Kirsty and Danielle’s wedding highlights video below, for more information please check out our hybrid photography and video package

Boho Woodland Wedding in Yorkshire

When we first spoke with Holly and Simon and they told us that they were planning to have their wedding in the family garden and do much of the work themselves, we could not have begun to imagine just how incredible the resulting wedding day would be. Of course we were excited to jump in and be a part of the day, but wow, this one was special!

Hull and East Yorkshire Woodland Wedding Photographer

When we first spoke with Holly and Simon and they told us that they were planning to have their wedding in the family garden and do much of the work themselves, we could not have begun to imagine just how incredible the resulting wedding day would be. Of course we were excited to jump in and be a part of the day, but wow, this one was special!

Holly & Simon’s pre-wedding photoshoot

The woodland theme is strong in this one with our adventure starting with a pre-wedding shoot in Nutwood, a woodland we love and also one with real meaning for Holly and Simon as this was the location that Simon popped the question just a few months earlier. This was a brilliant couple of hours exploring the woods together and hearing all about the wedding plans so far. We were also invited back to view the family garden which would be the location for the outdoor ceremony and wedding reception, of course we accepted the offer and went along to have a walk through the space together.

First impressions of the garden ranged from “this place is epic” to “how on earth does this become a wedding venue”. For context, we were seeing the family woodland in its true natural state in February. The leaves were on the floor rather than the trees and the branches above were looking a bit naked. We were presented the vision by Holly and Simon and were so incredibly excited to see what the family could do with the space.

Humanist woodland wedding ceremony

Fast forward to June and we were back again for the wedding day, it was a bit of a grand designs moment for us as we walked in knowing what it looked like the last time we were there and then been completely blown away by the transformation. The whole place looked incredible and was so far above what we could have possibly imagined, the amount of work put in by Holly, Simon and the family was so clear to see. The wedding suppliers chosen to be part of the day all agreed they should make this a permanent wedding venue!

The woodland ceremony space was immaculate with not a single leaf out of place, with the guests seated on benches it was over to the wonderful celebrant Charlotte Griffiths to welcome everybody to this most unique of wedding ceremonies. Charlotte delivered the most beautiful humanist wedding ceremony that was truly bespoke to Holly and Simon and full of moments we were absolutely honoured to be able to capture with our cameras. Charlotte had talked us through the ceremony earlier in the day so we had an idea of how this would unfold, the tying of the knot was a moment we loved capturing, with the knot held high above their heads, the tree canopy above and their friends and family watching on behind, this is a photograph that we were delighted to capture and be able to include within the gallery from the day.

Humanist Wedding Ceremony Yorkshire Handfasting

The whole ceremony experience was really magical, everyone in attendance would agree and will certainly remember this for a very long time. There was something really special about been outdoors with the sounds and smells of the trees around us, we also loved having the freedom to move around freely and be able to document this wonderful ceremony from every angle.

Charlotte prompted everyone to grab a big handful of confetti and shower Holly and Simon with it as they walked back down the aisle together as husband and wife, cue more photos!

Humanist Wedding Ceremony Yorkshire

Drinks were served in the woodland from the Randy Rabbit, we’re not sure if there are any awards out there for best home bar but if there are then for name and location the Randy Rabbit would be getting a rosette!

What is a humanist wedding ceremony?

A humanist wedding ceremony is a non-religious ceremony that breaks away from what we know as a traditional wedding ceremony. These ceremonies can take place anywhere and at any time of the day so they really do open up so many possibilities to couples looking to put their own creative stamp on their ceremony. Humanist wedding ceremonies are completely unique to each couple, a humanist celebrant will get to know your story and help to write a ceremony that truly celebrates your personalities and unique love for each other, often including non-religious readings and customs such as handfasting. Humanist wedding ceremonies are completely inclusive and are welcoming for everybody!!

Woodland Wedding East Yorkshire

Following the stunning ceremony we had some time to get the group photographs which were important to Holly and Simon, this included getting our drone in the sky for a big group photograph of everyone all together and also included Chris getting closely aquatinted with a friendly donkey or two which were roaming around the wedding too!

The afternoon was so relaxed with a focus on people, enjoying time together. The beautiful weather meant the marquee sides could be open all day with people able to flow in and out, the addition of hay bail seating outside was genius and gave plenty of places for people to share time together. Catering on the day was served by Annikas Apron, such a fantastic company who did the most amazing job serving up the most delicious food. We can give a double thumbs up for that, one for the people who are fab and just so friendly and another for the food itself which we were lucky enough to be able to sample too!

Wedding Ceilidh band, let’s dance!

Into the evening and we were so happy to catch up again with the Hessle Ceilidh Band who we absolutely love, as always they had everyone of all ages up on the dance floor joining in the Ceilidh. For anyone considering a Ceilidh our advice is to book it, a band like the Hessle Ceilidh Band will call the dances in a way that is really inclusive for everyone and create so much joy. This is obviously great for photos but mainly it is just great fun and is guaranteed to have big smiles on everyone’s faces as they dance into the night.

With photography coverage of the bands entire first set we were asked by Holly and Simon if we would like to have a dance too, we immediately said yes and had so much fun sharing a dance (or two) with them! Please check out some of the behind the scenes TikTok videos below where you can witness our moves in the Ceilidh!

Come behind the scenes with us

@christopherkphotography If you are considering a Ceilidh dance for your wedding, just book it! We had an incredible night photographing, and also joining in, the epic Ceilidh at Holly amd Simon’s wedding a few weeks ago. A massive congratulations to Holly and Simon, wishing you the happiest of adventures in your married life together!

We were delighted to receive this amazing review from Holly and Simon and just had to share it here too…

“Honestly couldn’t have wished for better photographs or better photographers! Don’t look elsewhere or you’ll be missing out!! I would scream their praises from the rooftop if I didn’t think I’d get noise complaints! Found them on Hitched and was so pleased I did!
They have not only sent us THE most beautiful photographs which really captured us at our best, but they are just the most amazing people to work with, couldn’t do enough and just were the most fun to have around.
If I ever need photographers again, there’s no-one else I’d turn to!
Couldn’t give higher praises if I tried and will be recommending them to everyone and anyone!“

Kelham House Country Manor Wedding

We had the total joy of photographing the wedding of Charlotte and Sam at Kelham House Country Manor, a wonderful wedding venue in Nottinghamshire.

Kelham House Country Manor Hotel Wedding Photo and Video

We had the total joy of photographing the wedding of Charlotte and Sam at Kelham House Country Manor, a wonderful wedding venue in Nottinghamshire.

This was a really exciting day for us for a few reasons, it was another new venue for us to explore, we put into practice some big changes to how we work and also we were doing all of this with two people who we have got to know so well and think are just fab! To elaborate on each of these things a little more, let’s start with the venue itself…

Kelham House Country Manor

We love exploring new wedding venues for the first time and seeing what jumps out to us creatively when we arrive. It really was a “wow” moment when we turned into the tree lined driveway for the first time and saw the building in front of us. The first thing we did was to get the drone in the sky to get a few establishing shots, from above Kelham House is even more impressive as you really see how it fits into the landscape with rolling fields to the back of the property as far as the (drones) eye can see.

From the driveway we spotted Charlotte waving to us through the window, having safely negotiated the landing of the drone we headed in to see her in one of the biggest and brightest bridal prep rooms we have ever seen. This space was fab, massive windows, beautiful natural light, high ceilings, plenty of mirrors and loads of space to move around which were all perfect room attributes for us and also the hair and make-up artist to work. We were able to move around freely and have a chat with everyone as excitement grew for the day ahead.

Charlotte and Sam had chosen to have an outdoor ceremony which was a decision we were fully onboard with, this took place on the lawn at the back of the property with the couple saying their vows under a really pretty gazebo which was useful to give them some shade but also really great for us as it gave some really interesting angles to work with as we captured all the real moments and emotions from this beautiful ceremony.

From the ceremony we took all of the guests to the front of the building and lined them up either side of the grand front door, making sure everyone had a big hand full of confetti ready to completely cover the newlyweds as they walked out of the building! This is always such a fun part of the wedding day, it’s brilliant to get everyone involved and to see the moment and emotion play out in front of our cameras. The front of the building was also a brilliant place to get the drone in the sky again to get a group photograph of everyone in front of this beautiful building.

The gardens were a perfect spot to do some group photographs of the family and friends, at this point of the day we had really bright sunlight so we used one of the many trees in the grounds to give us some shade and make sure everyone was stood in good light without harsh shadows on their faces or squinty eyes!

Arriving early in the day we had planned a quick loop of the gardens which would be perfect to take Charlotte and Sam for some relaxed portraits, we had a little walk with them after the group photos and were able to make use of the beautiful gardens to get some portraits that are packed full of life and colour.

After dinner guests could relax and enjoy the evening sun out on the terrace and have a dance inside on the dance floor, having these spaces is great and gives guests the option to take it at their own pace. Of course everyone was inside for the first dance which was just wonderful, with lots of family joining in for a dance afterwards too which is always brilliant for energetic photos that are full of joy.

From the dance floor we could see the sun setting through the trees which looked like something from a movie, Charlotte and Sam were happy to pop outside for 5 minutes and we were able to make full use of this amazing light for them to capture some extra portraits that we think have a sprinkling of magic to them!

Kelham House Country Manor Hotel Wedding Photo and Video

Our time at Kelham House Country Manor really was ace, it really is a beautiful property and is made even better by the brilliant staff who were so lovely and so easy to work with on the day.

Hybrid wedding photo and video

This was a really special wedding for us because it is the first we have been able to share which we offered both wedding photography and highlights video as a combined package. We have been working hard to adapt the way we work so that we can continue delivering photography galleries that tell the story of your wedding day while also having the addition of a highlights video that captures the movement and atmosphere of the day and really bring it back to life. We are delighted to have Charlotte and Sam’s highlight video out in the world and are really excited to continue to grow this side of our business.

We won’t say too much on this just now as there will be much more to follow in the next few months as we launch our hybrid photography and video package, we’ll have plenty more details of who this is ideal for, the benefits of combined photo and video and why we are so incredibly excited to be able to offer this to you. We will of course be in touch with all of our brilliant couples who already have us booked for full day wedding photography for the remainder of 2023, 2024 and 2025 with an exclusive option to add video to your photography package.

For now, please check out Charlotte and Sams wedding highlights video and also a short behind the scenes video showing a glimpse of what it is like having us along to be part of your day.

Wedding highlights video

We had the total joy of capturing the story of Charlotte and Sam's beautiful wedding at Kelham House Country Manor, a wonderful wedding venue in Nottinghamshire. On this wedding day we did both full day photography coverage along with videography which was delivered to the couple in the form of this highlight video.

Woodland engagement shoot - the first time we met!

Woodland Engagement Shoot with dogs

We first met with Charlotte and Sam for a pre-wedding shoot back in March, this took the form of a walk with their two dogs at one of their favourite spots, of course we took lots of pictures when we met them but the best part was getting to know them and hear all about their back story and their plans for their upcoming wedding. Turning up to Kelham House for their wedding day genuinely felt we were going to a friends wedding and we had the best day celebrating with them and their family.

Nottinghamshire wedding photographers

For Charlotte and Sam this meant that they were totally relaxed around us and they could enjoy their day just been their awesome selves, this led to so many beautiful real moments on the day which we were completely honoured to be able to capture with our cameras. This front row access to people’s wedding days really is something we feel privileged to experience, soaking in every element of the day we may have also managed to sneak in a dance and a turn in the photo booth too!

We were delighted to receive this amazing review from Charlotte and Sam and just had to share it here too…

“If you need an event photographer, seriously look no further than Chris and Rachel! This duo did such an amazing job to capture our special day. The amount of skill and dedication put into their photography is incredible, they have such a keen eye for beautiful shots and you can really see the love and passion they put into their work. However, the best thing we have taken away from this experience is how lovely both Chris and Rachel have been. Not only did they always keep us up to date and informed, they also made sure we felt comfortable the entire time. Any nerves or awkwardness we might have felt about having pictures taken quickly vanished, and as a result the whole experience was so enjoyable and unforgettable. We keep saying that hiring Chris & Rachel was like having extra friends at our wedding, who just happened to be taking lots of amazing photos!
We cannot recommend them enough“

Bunny Hill Weddings engagement photo shoot

When Kirsty and Danielle suggested meeting at Bunny Hill Weddings for their engagement photoshoot we were so excited and were very grateful for the wonderful team at the venue for having us for a few hours!

Bunny Hill Weddings engagement photoshoot

When Kirsty and Danielle suggested meeting at Bunny Hill Weddings for their pre-wedding photoshoot we were so excited and were very grateful for the wonderful team at the venue for having us for a few hours!

This was our first visit to Bunny Hill Weddings and we were absolutely blown away with how fab this place is, Lucy was super welcoming when we arrived and she was kind enough to give us a quick tour of the grounds, our immediate thought was that this would be a playground for photographers!

For the shoot we had access to the outdoor areas but we did also have a sneak peak in the buildings which all look incredible, we can’t wait to explore them more next time we visit. Actually while we were there, a team of people were working on some of the accommodation buildings, clearly this is a venue that values the guest experience and invests in keeping everything looking and feeling great.

From our initial video call we knew that Kirsty and Danielle had a little doggy and we were so happy that they brought Miley along with them for the shoot, she was so much fun to spend time with and quickly became our new best friend!

We loved our time exploring the venue with the couple and hearing all of their plans for their wedding, we just know this is going to be a big one!

We return to Bunny Hill Weddings in the Summer for their wedding day and we can not wait for it!

Engagement photo shoot - Gemma & Vin

It is always brilliant to meet up with couples to get to know them before their wedding days but it was extra special when we met with Gemma and Vin as it was Gemma’s birthday! What a privilege it was to share a couple of hours with these two.

It is always brilliant to meet up with couples to get to know them before their wedding days but it was extra special when we met with Gemma and Vin as it was Gemma’s birthday! What a privilege it was to share a couple of hours with these two.

We met with them at Nutwood woodlands in Raywell, we have been here quite a few times for shoots but also for family walks as it is fun to explore all year round. On this trip the sun was shining and everything was looking really vibrant as we head into summer. The light was pretty harsh at times but as photographers it pushed us to work creatively with our trusty flash coming in very handy giving us the ability to control the light and create some epic portraits.

Next time we meet these two will be on their wedding day later in the year, we have been told to expect Halloween vibes with a sprinkling of heavy metal, we can’t wait to be part of their day and meet the whole family!

Lazaat Hotel Wedding - Donna & Rob

We kicked off our 2023 wedding season in style with a short trip to Lazaat Hotel in Cottingham for the wedding of Donna and Rob! We had the best time celebrating with everybody and wish Donna and Rob every happiness for their future together!

We kicked off our 2023 wedding season in style with a short trip to Lazaat Hotel in Cottingham for the wedding of Donna and Rob.

Despite the threat of April showers, we arrived at the venue in the Spring sunshine, starting the day with bridal prep. We had so much fun getting to know Donna’s bridal party in the morning, there was a brilliant atmosphere and everyone was really chilled (there may have also been a few drinks consumed). The rooms had large windows letting in lots of soft light which was perfect for the make up artist and also great for us as photographers.

Imani Suite, Lazaat Hotel

We headed down the spiral staircase with a short pause for a few photographs on the way to the spacious and light Imani Suite for the wedding ceremony.

Imani Suite wedding ceremony

After the wedding ceremony the newly weds headed out via the private courtyard for their Reception drinks in the afternoon sunshine. It was great to head to the gardens for group photographs. As a way to congratulate the couple we armed the guests with handfuls of confetti, this created some fantastic photographs with lots of action even if the groom did get a face full of confetti (there’s always one)!

Lazaat garden wedding portraits

The gardens at Lazaat are so much fun to explore all year round and were looking fantastic as always as we took Donna and Rob for a short walk for their couples portraits. We enjoyed using all of the vibrant colours and of course we had to do some pictures on the bridge.

It was great as always to chat with the guests throughout the day, making a few friends along the way. A big thank you to our little helpers on the day for decorating our cameras with unicorns and koala bears!

Imani Suite evening party

As the evening arrived and the light changed we popped out to enjoy the warm light of golden hour and capture some extra portraits. We headed back inside to the Imani Suite and with everyone gathered around the dance floor it was time for Donna and Rob to enjoy their first dance before everybody joined them on the dance floor to party with them. We were up on the dance floor too and stayed a while into the evening to capture all of the fun.

I bet that you’d look good on the dance floor!

Dance floors are exciting, colourful, full of energy and movement. This is exactly what your photographs should be too, you want the photographs to make you feel how you did on the night.

Wedding dance floor photography

Wedding evening parties are just the best nights, all of your favourite people letting loose and celebrating with you. Often you’ll have extra guests for this part of the day that were not at the reception earlier, friends you may not have seen for years that have travelled miles to party with you. When you look back at your wedding photographs you want to see these people’s faces and you want to relive the excitement and joy while been able to feel the atmosphere of the night.

Dance floors are exciting, colourful, full of energy and movement. This is exactly what your photographs should be too, you want the photographs to make you feel how you did on the night.

There are lots of ways for photographers to approach this part of the day but the first step is to actually be there, included coverage varies from one photographer to the next but it is common for coverage to end as soon as you have done your first dance. Rachel and I love to hang around longer so that we are there for the party and have coverage of all of your guests letting their hair down!

By this point of the day most of your guests will be familiar with us, we’ll have spent much of the day with you all and you’ll be happy to welcome us onto the dance floor with you. By been in the action with you all, we are able to get photographs that are full of life and in the moment. The moves, the laughs, the spilt drinks, all of it!

Our lighting freezes the action but we control it in a way that keeps the atmosphere of your room, the last thing you want is to look like you were dancing with the lights on!

It is possible to photograph the dance floor from the edge of the room with a long lens but for us this results in photographs that lack the raw emotion and feeling of this part of the day. By been in the action we capture moments that simply would not be possible if we were stood further away.

We can’t really go on record saying we have a favourite part of a wedding day, genuinely we love every part of the day, but we do love a good party! We love seeing people that have been on their best behaviour all day let loose and make some shapes.

Best dance floor wedding songs

We’ve been to some incredible evening parties this year and had the time of our lives on the dance floor. It has got us debating recently what our ultimate wedding floor fillers would be, neither of us are DJs but if we ever had to step into that role for the night we have listed our top 5 songs to get people moving. We couldn’t agree so have made a list each…

Christopher’s top 5 wedding dance floor fillers…

  • Probably my most guilty pleasure, such a feel good song that tells people exactly what to do. Get this one on early in the night, one for all ages to dance along to!

  • Rachel and I were lucky enough to see Kings of Leon recently, one of our favourite bands of all time. It never gets old to see people on the dance floor with arms around each other singing along to this iconic chorus!

  • A slow starter that everyone recognises, once the chorus kicks in this one always has people bouncing. “go out and smash it”

  • We’ve seen empty dance floors become packed thanks to this gem! One that gets all generations up dancing together, the change in tempo throughout the song is brilliant fun too, slowing right down and then ramping up again for the big finish.

  • I had to include this, I don’t think there is an official dance to this but it seems to always have people throwing the same moves with arms in the air jumping up and down. There are a few big moments in this one that always deliver awesome pictures too, always love the big woo!

Rachel’s top 5 wedding dance floor fillers…

  • One of Queen’s greatest hits! Everybody loves the tempo of this song, it’s great for strutting lots of cool moves and fun to sing along to at the same time. Unleash your inner Freddie Mercury!

  • This song is great for letting your hair down, it reminds me of Cameron Diaz in one of my favourite movies, “The Holiday.” I love the energy in this one and it’s always great later in the evening.

  • I have to say this is my absolute favourite, when I hear this song it just makes me want to move… I literally can’t stand still. We have witnessed a couple of serious dance offs to this song at weddings!

  • Grab somebody and get yourselves on the dance floor, this is such a feel good song.

  • This song begins “nice and easy” but those that know, know that this one ends BIG!

Barrow Squash Club - Rachel & Ben

We had a brilliant night celebrating the marriage of Rachel and Ben at the Barrow Squash Club, these guys are just the coolest couple and we loved our time with them and their friends & family.

Wedding celebration photography in Lincolnshire

We had a brilliant night celebrating the marriage of Rachel and Ben at the Barrow Squash Club, these guys are just the coolest couple and we loved our time with them and their friends & family.

We made the decision to meet up a little bit earlier so that we could spend time doing some portraits and there was just enough daylight left to be able to do this before the party started. We made the short drive to the Waters’ Edge which is on the South bank of the river Humber in the shadow of the iconic Humber Bridge. It was awesome to be able to have this time together and we were excited to be able to get some creative portraits for them in this amazing location.

Fun group photography

With the sun setting fast we hopped back in the car to Barrow Squash Club which is such a cool venue. Ben had to explain to me that the room we were in was actually an old squash court, I then realised what the red lines on the wall were for! The bare brick and exposed wooden beams were the perfect backdrop and were beautifully dressed with bunting, fairy lights and balloons which had such a warm and welcoming feel for the evening.

The room came to life as Rachel and Ben’s brilliant guests arrived to celebrate with them, we loved the atmosphere throughout the evening and had a great time sharing a laugh with their friends and family.

It was so much fun to capture portraits of everybody throughout the evening including a couple of four legged guests, we hope these photographs will allow everyone to remember this night for many years to come.

A massive thank you to Rachel and Ben for trusting us to capture your celebration.

Congratulations again on your marriage, we wish you all the best for your future together. We just know it will be such an adventure and will be lived to the fullest!

Canham Turner Wedding - Grace & Joe

We had simply the best time with the beautiful Grace and Joe as they celebrated their marriage at the Canham Turner building on the grounds of Hull University. It really was an amazing day in a beautiful venue surrounded by truly brilliant people, huge congratulations to Grace and Joe!

After having the most fun with Grace and Joe on their engagement photoshoot and hearing their plans for their wedding, this was a day we had been so excited for and it turned out to be everything we expected and so much more!

Bridal preparation photography

It was an early start for the bridal party with Hair by Lynsay and makeup by Ellie at Lavish Bridal well underway before we arrived. On arrival it was brilliant to chat with everyone as the excitement for the day ahead grew. As we always like to do, we took this opportunity to get some photographs of the all important details along with some candid moments of everyone enjoying the time together. This was the first time we saw Grace’s wedding dress which we found hanging beautifully in the window upstairs, the stunning dress was from Wed 2 B and we were also super excited to spot the long veil which we knew would look amazing and be perfect for photographs. We were honoured to share a couple of very special moments with Grace, firstly documenting the beautiful moment her Mum and bridesmaids helped to fasten her dress, before a very emotional first look with her Dad. We were of course on standby with the tissues!

Groom preparation photography

Joe and his grooms people were getting ready just a few minutes up the road, we had planned our timeline for the morning with enough time for me to pop round and spend some time with them too while Rachel stayed with Grace and the bridal party. This put me in the very privileged position of being on a very small list of people that were able to spend time in both camps on the wedding morning and enjoy the excitement with both parties. This was so much fun for me but most importantly it meant Grace and Joe had photographs of each other on the morning of their wedding day to look back on together. Highlights from this part of the day included watching everyone learn how to fold a pocket square (every days a school day), before Joe was helped into his jacket by his Dad and we had a few group photographs on the lawn.

Canham Turner Building Hull University

Grace and Joe had chosen the beautiful Canham Turner building on the grounds of Hull University for their wedding ceremony and reception, although this is one of the oldest buildings on campus (fun fact - Canham Turner was built in 1948) it has been given a modern makeover with a stylish bar area and outdoor terrace. This space was perfectly suited for Grace and Joe’s wedding and we think is one of the coolest wedding venues Hull has to offer. As Hull wedding photographers we are fortunate to visit some amazing wedding venues in Hull and East Yorkshire, Canham Turner is definitely a venue we now have a soft spot for, the quality of venue matched by the high standard of service delivered by Mark and the team of staff who were excellent all day and a pleasure to work with.

Hull University Weddings

The Kingsley Suite at Canham Turner had been dressed beautifully by Serendipity and this gave an elegant backdrop for Grace and Joe as they said “I do” in front of their family and friends. With everybody keen to congratulate the newly weds after the ceremony we headed to the front of Canham Turner for a big confetti photograph before taking the time to capture some family group photographs which we knew were important to Grace and Joe.

Canham Turner Building Confetti Wedding Photography

Wedding portrait photography

It was amazing to have the opportunity to spend some time with Grace and Joe and capture their couples wedding portraits, this was the first time they had spent time alone together on their wedding day as husband and wife. We had planned a short walk around the campus after visiting the venue with them earlier this year and we were excited to explore the beautiful grounds and gardens with them in the sunshine. There really are so many brilliant photo opportunities on the Hull University campus and we made full use of these before getting back to the Canham Turner building to sit down for the wedding breakfast. While we were out in the gardens, guests had been able to enjoy the sensational talent of local musician Pablo Carrizo who was playing his acoustic guitar on the decking area, his voice was incredible and he had people on their feet dancing and singing along to his set.

Wedding speeches

After the delicious wedding breakfast (compliments to the chef), it was time for the speeches which were both emotional and highly amusing, in the words of Joe’s dad “even the cake was in tiers” A one liner which got a very good reception, the biggest laugh coming from Grace!

The unofficial first dance

It was a beautiful summers evening, guests were able to relax and enjoy themselves on the decking area outside the bar and listen once more to Pablo who continued after the speeches. Grace and Joe were having an amazing time and even had an unofficial first dance surrounded by friends and family whilst Pablo played their favourite songs. His set list had a few of our favourites in there too, including a quality version of Sex on Fire by Kings Of Leon and some Gerry Cinnamon which went down very well!

First dance

Grace and Joe enjoyed their official first dance with an audience of their loved ones watching on from the edge of the dance floor, the stage in the Kingsley Suite giving us a fantastic viewpoint to capture everyone’s reactions to this memorable part of the evening. It was also beautiful to see Grace and her Dad take to the dance floor for the Father and Daughter dance with Mum proudly watching on, it wasn’t long before all three of them were together in an embrace enjoying the moment together.

Canham Turner Kingsley Suite Wedding First Dance

Dance floor photography - the party!

As we love to do, we stayed well beyond the first dance and as the dance floor filled up we were in the middle of the party enjoying the night with everybody, some truly epic moves on display which were so much fun to photograph. We love this method of photographing the dancing, anybody can capture photographs from the edge of the dance floor but getting involved and taking part in the dancing with everyone is way more fun and the moments we can capture are so much more genuine and exciting. What a night!

It really was an amazing day in a beautiful venue surrounded by truly brilliant people, huge congratulations to Grace and Joe, Rachel and I wish you all the very best for your future together!

Wedding Celebration - Ruth and Dan

Ruth had warned us in advance that this part of the day could be quite lively, she was not wrong! We had so much fun up on the dance floor enjoying the dancing with everybody, it was brilliant to see everyone letting their hair down and having a party! Everyone had the best time and the energy and smiles in the photographs said it all! What a night!

Wedding celebration photography

Married in the Summer of 2020 when certain global events meant restrictions on numbers at weddings were in place in the UK, Ruth and Dan finally had the opportunity to have the big celebration with friends and family in 2022 and we were so happy to be approached as photographers to capture all of the memories of the day for them!

Speaking with Ruth and Dan on the run up to their celebration it was clear that the priority for their day was to have a day of celebrations surrounded by all of their friends and family, many of which could not be there two years ago. For the lucky few that could attend both celebrations it was a chance to get dressed up again, let’s face it, how many brides can say they got to wear their wedding dress twice? This time around Dan proudly wore his families crest to celebrate his families Scottish heritage, his groomsmen all wearing kilts for authenticity!

Hull wedding photographer Christopher Kitchen Photography Bridal Party

Hull wedding venue - Hull Ionians RUFC

With restrictions of the last couple of years still fresh in the memory we find it so special seeing extended families and groups of friends all together in one place catching up and spending time together. This was very much the case for our time with Ruth and Dan with guests travelling from North and South to get together and celebrate.

The celebration of Ruth and Dan was held at Hull Ionians RUFC in Brantingham, the venue is quite local to us as Hull Wedding Photographers but we had not attended the venue for a wedding previously, our only prior visit to the venue was many years ago for a firework display (which from memory was excellent). The choice of venue was absolutely perfect, the big function room allowing plenty of space for the large turnout of guests with a modern bar area and newly renovated outdoor terrace giving breakout spaces for people to relax in.

Wedding group photographs

With the emphasis on family and friends we set aside time at the start of the day to make sure we got the large group photographs that we knew were of great importance to Dan and Ruth, it was fantastic to be able to capture these moments for them. We also found a short amount of time before dinner to capture some couple portraits in the green area along side the sports pitches.

Evening wedding party - dance floor photography

Heading into the evening celebration we were introduced to the Hessle Celidh Band, Ruth had warned us in advance that this part of the day could be quite lively, she was not wrong! We had so much fun up on the dance floor enjoying the dancing with everybody, it was brilliant to see everyone letting their hair down and having a party! Everyone had the best time and the energy and smiles in the photographs said it all! What a night!

Congratulations once again to Mr & Mrs Wood!

Bardney Hall Wedding - Tracy & Graham

We were honoured to photograph the wedding of Tracy and Graham and their wonderful reception at the beautiful Bardney Hall in Barton.

We were warmly welcomed into the home of Tracy and Graham on a snowy January afternoon to get to know each other over a coffee and to discuss their upcoming wedding plans and requirement for wedding photography. Our immediate first impression was that they have exceptional taste in coffee, very quickly though we realised the thing of most importance to them was family, a family that we have genuinely been made to feel part of throughout our time together.

Bardney Hall in Barton

Tracy and Grahams wedding reception was to be held at Bardney Hall in Barton, North Lincolnshire. As a Hull wedding photographer we hadn’t visited Bardney Hall before so it was brilliant when we all met with Claire at the venue a few weeks before the wedding to discuss a few final details, to have a look around and to share more delicious coffee! Our excitement for the day really stepped up during this meeting, it was our first visit to Bardney Hall and we were stunned at how beautiful the building and gardens were. Leaving this meeting we were all excited to know the next time we would meet would be on their wedding day!

Bridal preparation photography

We met with Tracy and her bridesmaids a few hours before the ceremony, it was lovely to share the excitement with everyone as they prepared for the day ahead. It was such a special moment seeing Tracy in her dress for the first time, the children had told us that the dress would be fluffy and pink with lights on but we quickly realised this was a decoy to throw Graham off the scent, what Tracy actually wore was truly elegant with a beautiful lace back with button detail down the train.

St Michael & All Angels Church Cherry Burton

Tracy and Graham were married at St Michael & All Angels Church in Cherry Burton with a full congregation of friends and family, these adding to the service with readings and also music which was played from the heart and enjoyed by all. With the vows said and rings exchanged, Tracy and Graham left the church as husband and wife to a brilliant guard of honour formed by all in attendance.

Bardney Hall for group photographs

Arriving at Bardney Hall just a few days after the hottest day ever recorded in the UK and after a few weeks without rainfall we were pleased to be greeted by the lush green gardens which had clearly had been cared for and watered very well during the scorching weather. This was a beautiful backdrop for the family group photographs which we knew would be a very important part of the day for Tracy and Graham.

The gardens at Bardney Hall are amazing, the many different spaces are fantastic for a game of hide and seek, they are also a real treat for a photographer with lots of varying colour and texture to play with, something we made full use of as we spent time with Tracy and Graham to capture some couple portraits on their wedding day.

The Austen Suite

The Austen Suite at Bardney Hall boasts more of the timeless and luxurious décor that can be found throughout the property, this was a perfect retreat for a moment of reflection as Tracy spent some quality time with her bridesmaids. We loved the big bright windows and oversized mirror which were perfect for a few extra photographs.

Garden games, fun for all of us!

On the lawn were a selection of garden games which were brilliant fun for the children (and photographers) to enjoy, a brilliant addition to the day which encouraged people to mingle and get to know each other. Rachel had a great deal of success with the games, me less so but it was great fun nonetheless.

Wedding Speeches in the Ceremony Room

One thing we really enjoyed during our time at Bardney Hall was how individual the day felt, Tracy and Graham were able have an experience which was entirely tailored to them which was appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed by everybody, Rachel and I included. A unique touch were the speeches which were opened up to the room, allowing for anybody to take part. This was the first time we had seen this approach but it worked beautifully with some very touching words shared along with plenty of humour and advice that we could all take away with us.

The magic of Bardney Hall at night

With the sun going down, Bardney Hall becomes even more magical with the garden lit by fairy lights that look amazing against the night sky this was appreciated by the Harry Potter fans in attendance and great fun for us photographers. We took the opportunity to create a one of a kind portrait using all of the lights of the venue (and a little bit of our own), this was a perfect end to what was a perfect day and one we will always fondly look back on.

Hull Grange Park Wedding Photography

We had the absolute honour of spending the day with the brilliant family and friends of the newly weds Mr and Mrs Wickham. We took the opportunity to spend time in the gardens with Pippa and Ryan and capture their couples portraits, I can honestly say we have never laughed so much with a couple before, it was genuinely so much fun to share this moment with them and to capture their fun personalities and love for each other.

With the UK in full party mode for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we had the absolute honour of spending the day with the brilliant family and friends of the newly weds Mr and Mrs Wickham. It was clear from early conversations with Pippa and Ryan that they couldn’t wait for their wedding day, it was therefore no surprise when Pippa eagerly arrived early at the church before a good number of guests had taken their seats! The driver was very happy to do a few extra laps and we were back on schedule for the most beautiful ceremony at St Martin’s Church followed by the wedding breakfast at the Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel where they arrived in a stunning Rolls Royce. We took the opportunity to spend time in the manicured gardens with Pippa and Ryan to capture their couples portraits, I can honestly say we have never laughed so much with a couple before, it was genuinely so much fun to share this moment with them and to capture their fun personalities and love for each other. The speeches were full of humour and also very touching words of wisdom and advice, the whole room hanging on every single word spoken.

Congratulations once again to Mr and Mrs Wickham we wish you every happiness for your future together.

East Yorkshire Engagement Shoot - Grace and Joe

We absolutely loved our time with Grace, Joe and Beau it was damp but we had lots of fun and it was great to get to know them better and hear more about their story so far. We can’t wait to be a part of their big day and look forward to sharing the next chapter with Grace and Joe as they celebrate their wedding in August 2022!

It was so lovely to sit down with Grace and Joe in January to discuss their upcoming wedding plans, Rachel and I were also introduced to their puppy Beau… it’s safe to say I might have made a friend there, he is ace! Since our visit Beau has celebrated his first birthday and we had planned to meet the three of them for an engagement shoot in Spring when the weather had warmed up a little. We had pictured a sunny May evening and planned the shoot around the golden hour with the hope of capturing a beautiful sunset. However living in the UK we weren’t too surprised to arrive at Nut Wood woodland in Raywell, East Yorkshire to a cloudy sky and rain. This didn’t stop us though and we embraced the Great British weather, our trusty umbrella coming in very handy to keep them dry between photographs. We made sure to quickly get some portraits of Beau before he got too soggy and headed to the woodland for shelter under the canopy of the trees, this was a magical setting for Grace and Joe. We absolutely loved our time with the three of them, it was damp but we had lots of fun and it was great to get to know them better and hear more about their story so far. We can’t wait to be a part of their big day and look forward to sharing the next chapter with Grace and Joe as they celebrate their wedding in August 2022!

Beach Wedding East Yorkshire

I am somebody who has always been drawn to nature, whether it be a muddy walk in wellies through trees in a forest, trekking up a mountain to get the best view of the landscape or skimming stones on a beach (9 bounces is my personal best), exploring the great outdoors is something that makes me happy. I therefore jumped at the chance to meet with Dave and Ailsa to capture their wedding portraits on the beach at Hornsea on the East Yorkshire coast.

Relaxed wedding photography in the great outdoors!

Following a series of changes to plans forced on them by the global pandemic, Dave and Ailsa married at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Scarborough. Friends and family supported them through video link from their homes across the country, the joy of technology allowing people to connect and be together. With restrictions relaxed a few weeks later, I was honoured to have the chance to meet with the newlyweds and shoot some portraits on the beach to celebrate their marriage and love for each other.

Hornsea at sunset, a beautiful backdrop for wedding photography

The location for the shoot was Hornsea which I was really excited about, I spend lots of time on this stretch of the East Yorkshire coast so I was familiar with its beautiful beaches, the various sea defence structures and very changeable conditions. Arriving an hour before sunset we had planned ahead to make full use of the changing light to our advantage, a decision that would pay off in a major way!

Couple laugh on beach at East Yorkshire wedding

Assisting me on the shoot I had my wife Rachel by my side, a talented photographer herself it is always great fun working on weddings together. Having the extra set of hands was really useful as we set up lighting in fairly breezy conditions, allowing us more time to take pictures and less time trying to weigh down lighting stands to stop them heading out to sea. As with any photography, I love to bounce ideas off the people I am working with and the experience all becomes much more collaborative, occasionally throwing up a few surprises too (more on that to follow).

Relaxed and fun wedding photography

We had so much fun throughout the session, it was such a pleasure to be part of this. Here are a selection of my favourite images from the day and the stories behind them…

Walking hand in hand

Early in a session I find any kind of action shot to be a really great way to get people settled into the flow of things and to forget about the camera. Here we did a short walk to go get some natural movement and I captured the action from a few angles, this shot of Ailsa looking back over her shoulder was my absolute favourite from this sequence.

Portraits against a big sky!

This image took advantage of the sea defences and allowed us to have Dave and Ailsa stood on a higher level to me with the camera, this gave a beautiful angle looking up at them with the big sky behind them. I love the symmetry in this image, we used this in an album layout across the fold and it looked fab!

Confetti in the wind

Not having guests to throw confetti didn’t stop us from capturing the fun of a confetti photo for Dave and Ailsa. As a little surprise for them, we brought along some dried petals which meant we were able to enjoy this moment and get them a super fun photograph to cherish. One break in the breeze, one handful of petals, one willing assistant and one beautiful couple sharing a cute kiss, throw these elements together and we had such a fun image which the couple were super happy with! The petals were ordered online from Polly’s Petals, these looked amazing in photographs and with them been a natural product they caused no harm to the beach or sea life. We opted for pink blush petals but we were spoilt for choice as Polly’s Petals had so many different varieties available, be sure to check them out if you are looking for natural petals to be used as confetti for your own wedding day.

A moment of calm

This image has become one of my favourites of all time and at the time of writing this, it is the header image on the home page of my website. Sat sharing a moment of calm, I quietly moved around them with the camera documenting this moment from a few angles. I love the feeling of tranquillity and how present in the moment the couple are, these are the genuine moments that I love to capture and this image would go a long way to show how I like to work.

Epic sunset!

We timed the session to tie in with the sun setting but we were still very much in the hands of Mother Nature as to what the actual sunset would look like, thankfully we were given a gift of a sky full of detail and colour. With Rachel holding lighting, I stood in a big puddle to get the best angle and the result was an epic sunset photograph and a pair of soggy shoes (totally worth it).

Creative environmental wedding portraits

With the sun down, the sky was still still full of colour although now the colours had changed to rich blues. We moved to one of the sets of wooden stairs and set up to use the structure of the stairs to frame Dave and Ailsa, giving some extra interest to the picture. Growing up I used to do a lot of street photography and was often drawn to architecture with strong lines, I still look for these compositions now when photographing weddings and portraits because they look fab and give unique images that stand out! Again we added some extra light to the image to make it pop!

“She’s your lobster”

I’ve had a few requests from clients which take me by surprise, none more so than the request from Dave to put on his lobster suit for a few pictures. The story behind this relates to an episode of the popular TV show Friends in which reference is made to lobsters falling in love and been mates for life. Getting to know Dave and Ailsa the lobster reference makes total sense, these guys truly are made for each other!

Fun wedding photograph, she's your lobster

Kind words from the couple

“We were amazed when we received the photos how beautifully they captured the day and we will certainly be treasuring them for years to come. Chris took the time to understand what we’d like on the day and he did a fantastic job in making it a reality. The shoot was really well planned - Chris had given lots of thought to different shots but was also open to suggestions from us. We felt very much at ease during the shoot, helped by his obvious enjoyment of his work and his care to make sure we had a special time. We weren’t able to have many guests at our wedding but Chris has captured some beautiful moments that we can share with our family and friends.”

— Mr & Mrs Conlan

The beautiful flowers in these images were made by Sandhill Garden Centre

I have known Maria at Sandhill for several years, she is very approachable and always happy to help! She always takes the time to listen to her clients requirements and together with her team they produce lovely arrangements, anything from a delicate button hole to an elaborate spray of fresh flowers as a wedding centrepiece.

The brides bouquet was a beautiful combination of gerbera, lisianthus, thistles and a hint of gypsophila. The thistle flower added a hint of greenery and texture representing devotion and strength.

Barn Wedding East Yorkshire

If you are a creative couple looking to plan a truly unique wedding then The Barns, East Yorkshire could be the ideal venue for you. As a wedding photographer that loves the great outdoors this venue is so much fun to visit and one that I would always jump at the opportunity to visit again, this blog post is written from my own experiences and explains why I have such a soft spot for this venue.

The Barns East Yorkshire Wedding Photographer

If you are a creative couple looking to plan a truly unique wedding then The Barns, East Yorkshire could be the ideal venue for you. As a wedding photographer that loves the great outdoors this venue is so much fun to visit and one that I would always jump at the opportunity to visit again, this blog post is written from my own experiences and explains why I have such a soft spot for this venue.

How to get there

Getting to The Barns, East Yorkshire feels like an adventure in itself, approaching from Hull I exited onto the B1230 and then took a left onto Tongue Lane just after Newport. You drive along the long narrow road with views either side of stunning Yorkshire countryside as far as the eye can see. You will pass over a level crossing with a charming building attached, on my first visit to The Barns this crossing was still operated manually and it took me by surprise to see the attendant bring the barriers down to safely let the oncoming train through, this has now been modernised with automatic barriers but the crossing does still have a certain charm. Beyond this the road appears to almost come to an end as you approach a tight corner taking you to the right, The Barns are positioned on the inside of this corner and the generous car park can be accessed just before. Despite running close to the property, the road is so quiet that you very quickly forget it is there and you really do feel far from anywhere.

First impressions

Walking into the venue from the car park the first impression is that this is a property that is very much cared for and maintained to a high level. Everything looks sharp and tidy but in a way that maintains the rustic feel and character of the buildings, it is a genuine “wow” moment when you visit for the first time. The venue consists of two main barns, one is a brick building dating back to the 18th century and the other is a wooden structure that compliments this beautifully. Both barns are connected by a cosy courtyard with relaxed seating, more on that later!

Rustic Brick Barn Wedding Venue

On my most recent visit the groom and some of his family were staying in the onsite Swallow’s Nest Cottage, this is a new addition to the venue but it is built to fit beautifully into the land as though it has always been there. The cottage has a lovely country feel with a large kitchen boasting plenty of mirrors which came in handy for the groomsmen to fix their ties and pocket squares! The garden and paved areas outside the cottage are a fab spot for some smaller group photographs, with time on our side it was a good opportunity to get a few family shots and also some of the groomsmen looking dapper in their suits.

Harry Potter themed wedding

The theme for the day was Harry Potter which was very tastefully done and looked truly magical, blending beautifully with the rustic textures of the buildings. This is were The Barns East Yorkshire comes into it’s own, offering you a stunning blank canvas in which you can make your own with your own themes, ideas and décor. The team will talk through ideas with you, using their experience to recommend vendors to help make your ideas come to life. If you prefer the hands on approach then you will be given full freedom to make the venue your own, the team even allow you access the day before to get everything set up which is a massive bonus.

Autumn Harry Potter Theme Wedding with Pumpkins

A rustic wedding to remember forever

Guests begin to arrive, congregating in the courtyard before heading through to the brick barn where they can get a drink from the well stocked bar. As you would expect for late October in East Yorkshire, it was quite a cold day! That said, the heating was on in the barns making it lovely and warm, the contrast in temperatures making the barns feel even more cosy. The ceremony takes place in the brick barn which is visually stunning and a joy to photograph. There is so much to love about this building, exposed brick, high ceiling, exposed beams, even the chairs look good! This is brilliant for a photographer because I can shoot from just about any angle knowing that the backgrounds will look fab! With the bride arriving, guests are seated and the groom receives a few last words of support from his best man, at this moment the large door at the back of the barn will be opened ready for the bride to enter. All eyes are on the bride as she arrives into the barn and walks down the aisle, these moments always pass so quickly but are so precious and are a privilege to witness and capture. Having the ceremony in the barn is such a special experience, your own piece of history adding to the long history of the building. With vows spoken, papers signed and all sealed with a kiss, it is now time to celebrate!

Confetti photographs

Exiting the barn each guest is given a generous handful of confetti and line either side of the walkway ready for the confetti photographs, I love this part of the day! The trees along the walkway almost form a tree tunnel, add to this a newly married couple, lots of excitable guests and hundreds of colourful pieces of confetti and you have all of the elements needed for some seriously fun photos!

Confetti photo East Yorkshire Barns

With your guests all together and on their feet this is a fantastic opportunity to get the group photos done, we’ll go into this part of the day with a clear list which will have been planned ahead of the day, this way we can get each photograph quickly. The Barns offer a good choice of places to stage these group photos, personally I like the rustic walls of the barns because this is a backdrop that you don’t really get anywhere else, the textures look amazing and your group photos will really pop against this. This can be tailored depending on the size of your group and there are lots of other spaces to use, the large barn door looks brilliant and there are plenty of trees if a green backdrop is preferred.

Relaxed and fun couple photographs

With group photos finished and guests happily talking amongst themselves over a drink, this is a perfect opportunity to spend a short time getting some couple photographs which you will be proud to share for years to come. As mentioned a few times already, the barns and surrounding grounds are full of fantastic photo opportunities, we’ll have a loose plan and locations in mind so that we make full use of this time together. I’ll have my own ideas but if you have your own suggestions please shout them out and we’ll make sure to capture those for you too. I will always approach this part of the day in a relaxed manner, often this is the first time on your wedding day that you will have spent alone so I don’t want to take anything away from this moment for you. We’ll use a few locations and a variety of angles so that you have lots of photographs to cherish. As with all venues, the lighting changes dramatically throughout the day which will open up a wide range of new photo opportunities, I’ll communicate clearly with you and suggest a few ideas for additional couple photos at intervals during the day. Perhaps we get a beautiful sunset, or you may wish to use some of the venues lighting for some night time photos, there is no pressure from me to do this but if you would like these extras then I will do all I can for you.

Bride and Groom portrait outside rustic barn doors

Rustic wooden barn, evening celebrations

With the couple now back with their guests I take the opportunity to head into the wooden barn in which the wedding breakfast and evening party will take place. Wow! This room is spectacular! 4 long tables, all beautifully decorated in a way which would not look out of place in the Great Hall at Hogwarts. Clearly lots of time has been put into the small details so I make sure to capture images of everything to add to the overall story of the day. The lighting in the barn is fantastic, twinkly fairly lights highlighting the beams and textures of the walls, candles adding highlights to the tables.

Guests are seated for dinner and I take the opportunity to have a quick scout around to plan a few other images that could be achieved in the evening. I mentioned at the start of this blog about a courtyard with relaxed seating, what I didn’t mention yet was the fire pit at the centre of this area. Traditional leather sofas are so inviting to relax on, all lit and warmed by the roaring fire which is maintained by the staff throughout the day, I made a mental note that this was an area we simply had to use for a few quick photos later in the evening.

Speeches took place at the end of dinner, I made sure to position myself to capture the guests reactions and emotions as they shared stories of life, laughter and love. An interval in proceedings gave the opportunity to quickly get the firepit images planned earlier, I was so happy to be able to capture these for the couple as it is a unique image that is not achievable at most other venues.

Bride and Groom relax near roaring fire pit

Dancefloor photography

As the day comes to a close the party was in full swing, the dancefloor was full of life and I made sure to position myself to capture all of the action, such a fun way to end a beautiful day.

Final thoughts

The staff were incredibly helpful all day and couldn’t do enough to ensure every element of the day went smoothly, there is clearly huge pride taken in the venue and this makes for a truly enjoyable experience for all who visit.
